Advocates Africa is a network of Christian lawyers, judges and law
students in Africa with the main aim of “Doing Justice with
Compassion” Formed in 1998 at an Advocates International Global
Convocation in the United States. Advocates Africa has engaged with
various government and intra-government agencies, civil society
organizations, non-governmental organizations and the general public
in promoting Human Rights and Justice for all on the African Continent.
With members and network Partners in over 42 countries in Africa,
Advocates Africa approaches issues with a servant attitude. We seek to
encourage dialogue rather than being contentious or pointing fingers of
accusations.
As a specialized legal organization: Advocates Africa’s members are
strategically positioned to provide services in legal aid, public policy
formulation, legal advice, public and private international law,
alternative dispute resolutions, peace and security, peace and
reconciliation mechanisms, human rights advocacy, environmental law and in many other aspects of the legal sphere. With a bulk of our funding being sourced from within the African continent, the services
we provide are mostly free.
Greetings fellow members of Advocates Africa and a Happy New Year to you all! Today is the first Sunday of 2024. As a sabbath, it provides us with the opportunity to look to the year that lies ahead and seek to understand what the Lord Jesus Christ would have us do.
In Joshua 1:9, the Lord instructs Joshua thus:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
It is significant that the call made to Joshua asking that he be “strong and courageous” is preceded by a charge (Have I not commanded you?). The charge required Joshua to acknowledge the “I” (Yahweh) and also to respond to the “command” from Him. It would appear as though Joshua was being reminded of the Mighty God that he served and the concomitant duty to obey his commands - this duty being an acceptable act of worship. Is this not true of us as well?
That if we do indeed know the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, then is it not the case that our reasonable response is to obey Him without reservation? It most certainly is!
As the year starts, the AA Board is looking forward to working with the country fellowships and their members in various initiatives and assignments. We hope to lend support to spiritual growth of Christian lawyers across the continent. It is our prayer that our Lord’s voice will be heard in the courts, tribunals, boardrooms and chambers situate in our respective countries.
In all things we desire that every lawyer (and indeed every woman & man) should know Christ and seek to make him known. Our prayer is that in this year 2024 we would all be found doing the Master’s business in our respective places of work, our professional engagements, our homes, our social gatherings and in all other places.
May the Lord’s grace, peace and blessing abide with each of you. Kimathi Kamencu AA President
